Resident Evil Requiem: Everything We Know So Far
Resident Evil Requiem: Everything We Know So Far Resident Evil Requiem is shaping up to be one of the most highly anticipated games of 2026, marking the next major chapter in Capcom’s legendary survival horror franchise. Building on the foundations laid by Resident Evil Village, this new entry introduces a fresh protagonist, revisits the series’ darkest moments, and pushes the timeline further than ever before. With a mix of psychological horror, familiar faces, and long buried secrets, Resident Evil Requiem aims to be both a love letter to longtime fans and an accessible entry point for newcomers. Release Date and Platforms Resident Evil Requiem is set to launch on 27 February 2026. The game will be available on: PlayStation 5 Xbox Series X/S PC Trailers Released So Far Capcom has released several trailers that provide insight into the game’s tone, characters, and story. The first trailer introduced players to the new protagonist, Grace Ashcroft, and teased the shadowy, unsettling creatures she will face throughout her journey. A second trailer expanded on Grace’s backstory, focusing on her childhood and the mysterious role her mother plays in the narrative. At The Game Awards 2025, Capcom revealed a third trailer, confirming that fan favourite character Leon S. Kennedy will return as a playable character, instantly raising excitement among longtime fans. Where Requiem Fits in the Resident Evil Timeline Resident Evil Requiem is the ninth mainline entry in the franchise. The story is set approximately 30 years after the original T virus outbreak in Raccoon City, making it the furthest point in the main timeline so far aside from Resident Evil Village: Shadows of Rose, which takes place in the 2030s. This setting allows the game to explore the long term consequences of the outbreak that defined the series. Who Is Grace Ashcroft? Grace Ashcroft is a brand new protagonist for the series. According to early details, she is an FBI intelligence analyst known for her sharp focus, analytical skills, and deductive reasoning rather than combat experience. Grace is also the daughter of Alyssa Ashcroft, one of the survivors from Resident Evil Outbreak. Alyssa is believed to have died years before the events of Requiem, and uncovering the truth behind her death becomes a major emotional thread in the story. Story and Setting Capcom has released an official story synopsis for Resident Evil Requiem: “Everything is set in motion when a body victim of an unidentifiable disease is discovered in an abandoned hotel. FBI analyst Grace Ashcroft is assigned to the case. But the crime scene is the very same hotel where her mother died eight years ago.” As Grace investigates, the case begins to unravel the deeper truth behind the Raccoon City outbreak and the biological disaster that changed the world forever. Importantly, the game returns players to Raccoon City, revisiting and recontextualising events from Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3, and examining how the city was permanently scarred by the T virus. Leon S. Kennedy Returns as a Playable Character One of the biggest reveals so far is the return of Leon S. Kennedy as a secondary playable character. Set decades after the original outbreak, Leon appears noticeably older but remains highly capable. Gameplay footage shows Leon using firearms, performing signature combat moves like spin kicks, and even wielding a chainsaw. Unlike Grace, Leon is experienced and battle hardened, suggesting his sections of the game will lean more toward action heavy gameplay. Leon is expected to act as a protector figure, complementing Grace’s more vulnerable and investigative playstyle. Will Other Characters Appear? Because Resident Evil Requiem takes place so far into the future, other iconic characters like Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield would logically be well established by this point in the timeline. However, Capcom has not yet confirmed whether any characters beyond Leon will appear. That said, given the game’s reflective tone and its “Requiem” subtitle, additional cameos seem likely. Do You Need to Play Other Resident Evil Games? While Resident Evil Requiem connects closely to Resident Evil Outbreak, that game was released on PlayStation 2 in 2003 and has never been rereleased. Because of this, it’s unlikely to be required playing. Any necessary background on Alyssa Ashcroft will almost certainly be explained within Requiem itself. That said, familiarity with Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, and Resident Evil 4 especially their modern remakes will enhance your understanding of the story, particularly due to Leon’s involvement and the return to Raccoon City. Gameplay Expectations Resident Evil Requiem will allow players to switch between first person and third person perspectives, letting them tailor the experience to their preference. First person is expected to heighten tension and immersion, while third person offers broader situational awareness. Grace’s lack of combat experience suggests a stronger focus on survival horror, with limited resources, exploration, puzzle solving, and moments of vulnerability. Her gameplay sections are expected to feel tense and oppressive. Leon’s sections, by contrast, will likely provide bursts of fast paced action, featuring gunplay and more confident combat encounters. How Scary Will Resident Evil Requiem Be? While recent Resident Evil games have leaned more toward action, Requiem appears to be shifting back toward pure horror, similar to Resident Evil 7. Early footage suggests a focus on dark environments, sudden scares, and a constant sense of dread. Leon’s presence may introduce more action heavy moments, but until Capcom reveals how large his role is, the overall tone remains uncertain. That said, all signs point to Resident Evil Requiem delivering plenty of terrifying moments especially for players who enjoy being pushed to the edge by atmosphere and suspense. Resident Evil Requiem is shaping up to be a powerful blend of old and new, revisiting the franchise’s most defining tragedy while introducing a new generation of characters and horror. As more details emerge, it may prove to be one of the most important entries in the series to date.
